Everyone seems to be ignoring the biggest boy on the block, the 50 bmg. Get a barret single shot. Its all the rifle you'll ever need for anything on the planet. Its also excedingly accurate. Plan on reloading and even then its not cheap :-)

The 600 double no thanks, before my grandfather passed he was a serious africa hunter, the big 5 an plains game both, in 1998 we were in south africa ( zim ) on a cape buff I fired 4 shots from a 500 nitro ex double an my god I hurt for days. Those were rapid shots an reload hit him again kinda shots. I still have that beast sitting in the corner below the buff, an have not felt the need to ever shoot it. Have fun buddy.

I have an early Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70. It has the ported barrel. I added a Pachmeyer Decellerator recoil pad. It does rock me, but a proper shooting stance makes it very manageable. 340gr Hard Cast flat nose @ 2100 will take care of anything in the lower 48. I have yet to find a utility pole that will stop that bullet.

To me, it does not kick any worse than a hot 12 ga slug.

Yea thats about right recoil wise, I had to go choot it to see ,its been a few yrs since I always choot my sharps an the loads I run are not hotter than the sun an it weighs a ton so no recoil. But yes my guide gun does rock a bit

I suppose I'm guilty of passing on mostly second hand information. I've seen a couple of "Remlin" lever actions in the LGS and I wasn't impressed with the apparent quality of the guns but I didn't get a chance to shoot either.

On the other hand, I would encourage you to do some web searching of your own if you question the truth of the talk about bad QC. You can find dozens and dozens of FIRST HAND accounts of serious problems with Marlin guns since the take over. Over on the Marlin Owners forum they had to add a new subforum just for all the complaints people were posting about their new guns.

You have to make your own determination in the end. IMO though the evidence is pretty damning that Remington dropped the ball big time when they took over production of the Marlin line.
