Default 45-70 or 30-30

I'm looking at getting a new lever action rifle. But..... I got it down to two calibers.
Good old 45-70 or trusty 30-30?
This will be my trail gun in Nevada.

I love the 45/70 personally. Both are age old rounds they 45/70 was what 1873? By trail gun what are you wanting to shoot?

What exactly will you be using it for?

Both cartridges are good for a trail gun. The 45-70 will kick harder, but will fire a much larger bullet than the 30-30. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on something as large as a grizzly.

The 30-30 on the other hand will kick lighter, so fast follow up shots are easier. It can easily take out animals such as deer, but I would prefer a larger gun for animals such as bear.

I've never had anything run away from my 45-70 and It doesn't kick any more than a 12 gauge shotgun. I've had it many years with no problem. I use a Kahles 3X9 scope that's hard to beat.

In Nevada a 30-30 Carbine will take care of you very well. You really don't need a heavy rifle like the 45-70.

My buddy has a Marlin in 45-70 and I love shooting that thing. It's accurate and with cowboy loads you can shoot it all day. Try some Buffalo Bores and it does kick. Just put a good recoil pad on it and you're good to go.

Love my 30/30.
I'm reserving 45/70 for a trapdoor.

We have mountain lions coming up close to our house. My dogs run free some nights but, now getting word of the mountain lions showing up in back yards we keep them in!! And some of my hiking trails and camping spots have big-cat trails and markings. I'm leaning on getting the Marlin 336 30/30.... But I know 45 is some good put down power!!!!

.30-30 will handle anything in Nevada.
