45-70 at 1000 yards?
Had a guy come into work earlier looking for a .308 just to compare saying he was building one, so we got to talking about actions and yada yada onward. Then he said he was wanting a 45-70 in a bolt gun to hunt hog and deer with in brush, okay cool so we started talking since he said it would only be a 100 yard rifle max. Then goes off to say he has some 45-90s and 120s along with a 45-70 that he shoots at 1000 yards with iron sights at a 1ft by 1ft steel target. Is it just me or is that entirely unrealistic to y'all as well?

Yeah I think he may have gotten the 1000 yards mixed up with 100 yards. I don't doubt the round since that is with it's range, I doubt the 1x1 with Iron Sights.

Unless he's Matthew Quigley (unlikely) I'm calling BS. I really like my Howa. I don't like remmys so much, but hard to argue that it ain't a good one. When as many custom gun guys use the 700 action as there are, kinda gotta give it to them.
Now, back to MW3... |
Those rounds could reach out to that distance, but not with that kind of accuracy, especially with iron sites. Hitting a 12"x12" target is extremely difficult (if not almost impossible) even with rounds like 7mm mag, 30-06, .338 Lapua, .300 win mag, and the big daddy of them all, the .50 BMG. And that is with a high powered scope! He probably just meant 100 yards.

I dont know about the 1'x1' target but there are groups out there that regularly shoot the 45-90,120 out to very long ranges. Interesting when you figure the mid range trajectory will be over 50'. Yes that is feet. If you have a known distance, you can lob a big bullet in there with good consistency.
