Ill be honest with you I can 1 hand my 338, NO IM NOT SAYIN IM SOME BUFF TUFF SOB, im6'2'' 215lbs, I shoot a christensen arms carbon one custom in 338 win mag, it has a 32'' carbon fiber barrel with one of the best custom muzzle brakes on it, christensen makes it, an they put a kick ease recoil pad on it. My brothers 06 kicks like an alabama mule compared to my 338. Now that said the fit is perfect, the lop is exact, my check weld is exact fit to me that helps a ton. Also I have a 338 model 70 that makes u cringe just pickin it up.

I do agree that a new hunter/ shooter may want to hold off on a 338 unless they can spring the bucks for a custom with custom pad an a good muzzle brake, if not well plant your butt an be ready for a scope wackin good time

If you want a medium bore rather than a 30, you might look at the 338 Marlin Express, 358 Winchester and 35 Whelan.

My brother shot his last (mule) deer with a .375. 300 gr partition. Hardly had any meat damage. To each his own.

I think a nice rifle in experienced hands is the issue. I killed my last elk with a 25-06. Ya, lighter than most guys prefer, but 1 shot behind the shoulder and done.

If you get a .338 it could be perfect or terrible. All depends on how well you get to know it.

Hell, if them ol boys could shoot em with .54 cal muzzle loaders...

My $0.02

The question is why would you WANT a .338 when smaller calibers that are cheaper and easier to shoot would be perfectly adequate for deer? Are you going to hunt larger game down the road? Or is this mostly a testosterone thing? You might wind up HATING that rifle, while a .308 or .30-06 is much more adaptable to different hunting situations. I've seen guys completely muck up an elk hunt with a .338 and others who drop an elk with one shot with their good ole .308. Anticipation of recoil can really screw up a shot when in the heat of the hunt.
