Default .338 too much for deer hunting?

Been getting different opinions. In the market for a new deer rifle and thinkin about the savage 11/111 trophy hunter. 338 win mag. Is. 338 overkill for deer hunting?

how do you kill a deer any deader than dead??

if your referring to excessive meat damage. then yes i would consider it a poor round for whitetail.

My son uses a .338 win mag sometimes for deer. Gotta say it does the job. I don't like the recoil myself but he's a stud and loves it. Nothing wrong with it if you can handle the muzzle blast and kick.

+2 I have used my 338 on muledeer for the last 7to10 yrs no way is it to much put it BEHIND THE SHOULDER HINT HINT, does no more damage than a 30/06 or any other caliber. Hit the shoulder, well u all should know what happens then even with a 30/30 it tears the hell out of the op shoulder

I use a 9.3. It is a 9.3x57. Fits in between the .358win and .35 Whelan. Just a .366. Just about the nicest deer rifle to shoot. Recoil is a little above a .223 w/ 232gr, 270 and 286gr are like a 6.5x55 w/ 140gr. very light recoil. Carries enough energy to put a big hurt on any North American game out to 150 yards. If we were talking grizzly, I would prefer a 9.3x62, but at under 100 yards it will do. Carries 2500fpe at 100 yards. When it hits a Whitetail, it lifts them off their feet and drops them flat.

True. Some bullets/calibers/ weights will not make it through the shoulder, so that becomes a huge issue w/ a wounded animal.
