.338 Lapua Mag vs .338-378 Weatherby

Quick question!

Why is the .338 Lapua Mag more popular than the .338-378 Weatherby Mag? The ballistics on the .338-378 Weatherby are better than the Lapua Mag but it is not nearly as popular. Am I missing something??

the weatherby brass is expensive for one. Then the Laupa round doesn't have a belt. If you want accuracy you don't want a belt on your case. The belted mag cases head space on the belt which leaves a lot to be desired. Also with weatherby you have very long throats Mr. Weatherby was not worried about accuracy too much he wanted the most speed he could get out of his cartridges. So if you want a more accurate rifle chambered in a weatherby caliber then you need to get a barrel and have it chambered shorter and a shorter throat.

Don't forget a new comer to this category the 338 edge which is a 300 rem ultra mag necked up to 338. But there is a 338 rum right yes but it is a tenth of an inch shorter than the 300 rum.

Actually the belt serves no purpose after the case is fireformed in the chamber. Then you neck size it and headspace off shoulder. Also then the belt has NO effect on accuracy.

"Why is the .338 Lapua Mag more popular than the .338-378 Weatherby Mag?"

In this country I don't think it is. I say that based on ammo availability. I have yet to see a box of .338 Lapua ammo anywhere, while .338-378 Weatherby is available at most any well stocked gun shop. The .338 Lapua is more popular overseas. The British use it as a sniper rifle platform in their Accuracy International long range rifles. I don't see the belt as a plus or a minus. American Magnum rifle cartridges have been, and still are, belted. Now it has become all the rage to go "belt less". I like tradition and belts on Magnum's. Bill T.

Bill:

It is a popular cartridge in the US, it was designed as a sniper round by the US Navy.

The US Army have a few rifle in .338LM, as do the Marines. I know they both have numbers of the Canadian built PGWDTI Timberwolf like mine. It is also the new (2+ years) intermediate sniper rifle in Canada - the C14. Mine is as issued to the Military sans the can.
