The government has bought literally billions of dollars worth of ammo for multiple firearm types, more than they could use up if they shot everyone three times. There will be surplus.

either cartridge is more than capable of taking everything that walks in north america. in the case of elk moose and grizzly the 30-06 gets the edge because of better performance with heavy bullets. other than that they are exactly the same.

performance of a cartridge is highly dependent on the gun that bullet is coming out of.
What he said! Like I tell folks, "If you have one of them don't sell it to get the other."

We are getting off topic here, as hunnting has nothing to do with military or Worst-Case-Scenario, SHTF Day, bug-out ammo supply.
That said:
My own brand of paranoia has been reinforced by what I have heard independantly from three fed-LEO; "If we cannot get the guns, get the ammo!"
There just ain't gonna' be no 'surplus ammo' sales!
That order has evidently come down from the white house, since NObama knows that he will not get the gun & mag bans that he wants.
The tally of ammo bought is believed to be near, if not above, 2,000,000,000 - that's right BILLION- rounds that homeland security has squirreled away, depriving not only civilians, but Police Departments nationwide, of practice and duty/protection ammo.
At a gun show today I actually saw people pay 65$ for a 325 round box of .22 lr Winchester, and 100$ for a 500/brick! Them people is nuts!

In the rural west you can always find two cartridges, even in gas stations: the 30-06, and the 7-mm Rem mag. Both at about 180-grains. 308 is a sometimes, and then only if it happens to be the "oddball" the owner shoots.

ShootingLooney, I agree. Not sure if you we're taking to me, but to be clear, I wasn't referring to surplus ammo "sales". I was refering to battlefield salvaging.

This weekend I saw plenty of .30-06 ammo at Academy and Walmart but not one round of .308/7.62. So as far as buying ammo I'd go w the 06. A bird in hand sort of thing......

The 308 is a great round. But any thing the 308 can do the 30-06 can do better. After ww2 the us army was looking for a small round than the 06 there was nothing wrong with it they just wanted to have the men carry more rounds thats when the 308 was born. Now i happen to own a savage in 308 and a 1903 a1. both are great rounds i just would chose the 06 over the 308win
