What bamashooter said..if you hunt with either in commercial 150-165 gr, depending on the heft of your rifle you won't see hardly any difference in recoil, that's why I've shied away from synthetic stocks but ended up with a few like my Weatherby 30-06 Vangaurd SS S2 which is unbelievably accurate right out if the box but my M1a in .308 actually kicks less...

The 30/06 is a lot more versatile. You don't need to be a reloader to find ammunition for a wide variety of purposes. You can find 30/06 ammo loaded with everything from 150 gr boatail bullets to 220 gr roundnose brush busters.
