I'm sure this has been covered before so I apologize in advance for it. Last week I went out to sight in my savage model 10 .308 with some reloads since those were the only ammo I had. At 50 yards, I couldn't hit anything. I tried to bore sight it and when adjusting the reticle, it was maxed out on elevation and was shooting about 8 inches low. Any suggestions? I'd like to have it to where it's sighted in at 100 since it had mil dots and I'd like to learn how those work more

I should also add, it's a fixed 16 power scope

Too much magnification.

Check your mount/rings. Is there built in MOA?

Start at 10 yards, find out where POI is and walk it in.

Go to 25 yards and follow walk it in.

Go to 50 yards and follow walk it in.

Go to 100 yards and follow walk it in.

What brand of scope is it?
What type of base/rings are you using?

If you are maxed out on your elevation, your scope is either mounted too high off the rifle,or doesn't have much adjustment in it to start with.
You may need to get a 20moa base or get a set of Burris Signature Zee rings-you can put different inserts in them to get the same results.

I have seen instances of the rear mount being shimmed with 1 or 2 pieces of aluminum cut from a soda or beer can in order to even out the adjustment on a scope though I think that is less than ideal.

Here's a picture. I won't be able to look at the brand until I get home. Maybe one of y'all will know by looking?

16X on a .308??? Really??

2.5x I could understand. Even 4X.

Do you plan to hunt with that gun? If so I would scrap that scope in favor of one with a variable power, nothing wrong with high magnification when you want or need it but it is really going to screw you on field of view, I would go to a 6-18x or something of that nature, 6 is even too high for me for a hunting rig but if I were hunting in open fields it wouldn't be such a big deal.

I do plan to hunt with it and am going to scrap it as soon as possible when funds allow and am going to look at the Sightron SIII in 6-20x50 I believe since where I shoot, the fields are up to 800 yards long and I'd like to make sure I can see that far even though I won't shoot outside 500 on Yotes. Here are some more pictures of the rings and scope. No markings are on either

Shag,

Maybe it has the wrong bases on it. The screw holes in some model of basses will line up for the Savage Rifles but if they are not for the correct model you can run into this problem. I do not know what kind of scope it is but also a person can damage the adjustments from trying to cause them to over travel. A Leupold for example can turn and turn it just wont do anything when they get to the end of their adjustments. But some scopes can be damaged by forcing the adjustments. Maybe that is what the previous owner has done so that is why I asked what type scope it was. Obviously the 16 is a little much if a fixed power. But as stated with that much of a discrepancy it is one of the two mentioned reasons. That is also a lot of shimming at 50 yards?
