.308 rifle, Is it good for all this?

I first of all want to hunt buck maybe some elk but not much. I'd like to target shoot at around 500 yards. I love sniping is .308 good for 800 yards

800 yards would probably be better served by a faster round, like the .30-'06, at least of the super-common calibers. It is still a cheaper 30 caliber round for target shooting than most other rounds, besides .308.

it will get to 800 but no caliber is easy at that range or greater.

308 will do fine for what you want. john is right about 800 yd shooting tho.

The .308 is used for competition as far as 1000 yards but those shooters are a lot better than I will ever be. I was surprised at how much harder it was to stay on the target at 500 yards.

Those 1000yd shooters rifle cost about wat my truck did too :p
500yds is about it IMO for a 308-
I did OK with a M-14 at 500yds in boot camp but thats a looong way to shoot :o

The .308 Win. is a great round.

IMO, the 308 in the proper rifle and a good shooter will reach beyond 500 yards, has been done many times. my question is this what is your level of experiance in shooting at 500 yrds or longer? because if your level of shooting is a couple of hundred yards or less, then no caliber or rifle is going to make you able to shoot 500 yrds and more until you spend a lot of time on the trigger. 50BMG sniper rifles will reach past a mile accurately with someone who knows how to utilize that rifle, but a rifle doesn't a person a good shooter.

First, Hi rem870forever,

Welcome to FTF.

IIRC, perhaps 30.06 is the only caliber which has taken more

Buck and Elk than .308.

Where do you target shoot at 500 yards? Do you have any pics

of some groups at that distance?

What, specifically, is it you love about sniping?

Because it gets a lot of hype, and it's lots more fun

to read about than do, in reality.
