.308 for deer hunting?
So how well will a .308 work for deer hunting? Or would a 270 or 30-06 still be a better choice? Opinions please

Where do you live FOOL:D? 308 is fine for deer. 30-06 is more versatile if you reload but a 308 is good medicine for Mulies.

It will do fine on Elk as long as you hit em in the engine block with a good bullet. 150grain and up.... preferably a bonded bullet and keep your shots 200yrd or less.
What rifle are you looking at? |
.308 is one of the most used hunting rounds for large game. It will work.

The 308 is a very versatile round. With the proper load it will work on prairie dogs to big bears. The 30-06 can be loaded a little higher but requires a long action. The 308/7.62x51 was designed to replace the 30-06 with a full power round that would function better in automatic and self loaders. New rifles are available from $250 on up. New economy bolt actions are running in the $300-$400 range and are very accurate. I have a Browning BLR in 308.

We don't have mule deer or elk where I live but I'm a big fan of the .308win for whitetails. I load a 150gr bullet at arounf 2700fps and they work just fine. Next season I'm dropping to a 125gr. psp at the same 2700fps and give it a try. Should work just fine.

I haven't ventured into reloading yet so with that said is the .308 readily available (usually readily available). Everything seems to be hard to find right now. I am debating between the.308 and the 270 win short mag.
