Default is 308 actually the same as 7.6wx51

I bought some ammo from a buddy. He just has a bunch of surplus. He brought me 40 rounds. Some of it is stamped 7.62, some is 308. I know the 5.56 v 223 debate runs long and hard. I just want to k ow if this is a similar thing or if they are in fact universal to eachother.

It is a stevens 200 stamped in 308. I know the guy won't buy junk or sketchy stuff so my guess is just that he mixed some surplus in with others. Guess ill try to find an answer from savage.

ATTENTION, PLEASE !!

Thank you!

7.62x51 is the full metric designation for 7.62 NATO.

There is no such thing as .308 NATO. There IS a .308 Winchester.

Externally, the .308 and 7.62 NATO CARTRIDGES are the same. The CHAMBERS are different, as is the brass. NATO brass is thicker, so is smaller inside.

In general, you should not shoot .308 in a gun marked 7.62 NATO. You CAN shoot 7.62 NATO in a gun marked .308. If reloading cartridges, do not use .308 load data in 7.62 brass- pressures will be higher.

So if you have a gun marked .308 winchester you can shoot .308win AND 7.62 NATO?

It seems we are getting two different responses. If the NATO brass is thicker than wouldn't it be a slower load Ed round? Or is it a different powder which Burman hotter thus giving you a hotter round?

Some have pressure levels backwords. The 7.62x51 nato has a max pressure level of 60,200psi
The 308 win has a PSI of 62,000.

Shoot all the 7.62x51 in a 308 you want too. DO NOT shoot the 308 in a 7.62x51 nato chambered semi-auto or auto rifle
Also so 308 tends to be a faster round when bullet weights are the same. Wiki can be your friend along with loading data!!

I don't see how you can hurt a modern rifle firing either ammo. I thought it was all about pressure. There are differences but not dangerously so. I have about 500 rounds through a 93 Mauser in 7.62. I always shot M80 7.62 because that was what was cheap. I think you would see higher pressure in .308 commercial loads.

Longgunner- that is correct. A .308 Winchester can shoot .308 OR 7.62 NATO. A 7.62 NATO should NOT shoot .308 Winchester.

It is the exact opposite of the .5.56/ .223 situation.
