308

What are some of your longest accurate shots with a .308

6.23", 10 round group at 600 yards on a standard NRA 600 yard target, using a Springfield M1A Super Match rifle and iron sights using Lake City Match Ammo. This was about 2 1/2 years ago. Group was shot from the prone position using a sling and no rest. I have, to date, not been able to repeat it. Come close, but no cigar.

I want to shoot in some rifle matches, but the rules say you must use the prone position. I am not physically able to shoot prone so they won't let me shoot. This does not seem right. Sorry to go off topic.

I cannot shoot high power matches anymore either because of severe back problems. I have problems getting into prone and then cannot get back up without assistance. Kneeling and sitting are very difficult also. The M1A is also too heavy for my back while standing. I delegate most of my long range shooting now from the bench. I guess we all have to get old sometime.

That's some damn good shooting,Jim.

I can't see a target at 600 yards anymore without a scope.I need to break down and have Lasik done, then maybe I could shoot open sights again.

Now that's shooting. I'd need a scope with Hubble written on the side of it just to see the target at 600 yards. :)

I'm doing decent groups at 460 yards now, but I don't have anywhere to shoot any further. It's still fun though.

Shooting 8" steel @ 1100 yards, prone, often.

Back to reality, I use to shoot 700 yards as it was the longest range here in NH.
That is far enough w/ a .308. I'm very content w/ 300..400 yards these days.
