I will second the 165gr Game Kings, they are DEVASTATING on deer class game, only one has taken a step after then shot, and that was an accidental gut shot when my brother jerked the trigger, even with a gut shot the deer only ran a few yards before going down for the count. Only problem with that bullet is the meat damage is excessive on small coastal deer if you don't keep it out of the tasty bits, two deer have nearly been decapitated due to neck shots and the last one had a legitimate basketball sized exit wound, at 2,900fps+ speeds game kings make nasty fragmentation damage at close range (inside 50 yards) but all bullets have exited with no sign of core jacket separation.
I use my 308 for 150gr and my 30-06 for 165gr or heavier, that said I do have a shockingly fast/accurate 150gr 06 load using RL19, I load those for my sister in law.

That depends on the twist rate.My 308's all have 1-10 twist, same as my 30/06 and 300 Win Mag. I can shoot up to 220 gr out of mine, and they love to shoot 208 gr A-Max and 210 gr Berger VLD's.

my 308 is a 1:12 and it shoots long boat tail 180gr SGKs into sub 1/2" groups using W748. They stabilize very well but start running out of case with the heavier bullets even with compressed loads.

Now that you have your mind set on caliber, may I suggest the rifle?

M1 Garand, 'The greatest battle implement ever devised' in 30-06.

I'm not sure what your intended purpose is for the rifle, but I still say M1

Funny....
I was going to recommend M1A if he went .308!
Great platform either way.

in a 308?? no. you lose a lot of velocity going to a 180 grainer. its great on whitetail however at 100-200 yards then it drops like a rock. my wife used a 180grain nosler partition to bag her first buck. we used it because it shot close to her point of aim and couldnt get more of the hornady 165vmax fast enough. she shot em all instead of setting em aside...

i would not use it on bigger than whitetail at less than 200. simply because of the lack of velocity. if you want to use bigger bullets 30-06 is your cartridge.

i love the 308 but its not a good fit with 175-220 grain bullets.

if his budget is tight and he wants a bolt action, may i suggest the Marlin XL7 in 30-06? very accurate, pillar bedded stocks, adjustable trigger, super great recoil pad and decently priced. has a MSRP of $391, but many times they can be had for much less at most places. i own three of these X7's and they are great rifles and look great too. heres a link to some of the specs.
