I use a .303 SMLE for deer. Put the bullet where it should go, is more than adequate for the task.

.303s with military issue MK Vll ball have taken elephant.

Not my first choice for pachyderms, but..just sayin....

More than adequate in the hands of a good hunter and rifleman for North American game.

Not MKVII, Bell used .303 w/ Lead solid bullets. MKVII came after Bell.

The .303 British is my favorite cartridge for deer. It drops them faster than any other round I've ever used. And I've dropped deer from 10 yards to 300 yards with it. :)

But several others after Bell used Mk Vll.:) And countless indiginous troops used it for everything since it was all they had available.
