the advantage would be in the heavier bullets when shooting longer ranges. if you already have a 338, then really wouldn't be much need for the 300mag. some people use the 300 mag for target shooting but also realize that there is only so many rounds that can be fired before a barrel swap is needed. if i were you and had a 338mag, then i would go for the 308 if looking for another rifle. the 338 will do anything at about the same ranges as the 300 mag and then some, and a 308 would make a fine target and medium range hunting rifle.

Oh ok thank you, thats what my dad says too, and hearing it from you just makes me lean more towards the 308's

So on average a 300, 20 round box costs around $3.34 more than a 308 20 round box of ammo.
IMO that isnt a huge difference you'd have to shoot aprox. 16 boxes of the 308 20 round boxes, by which then you'll save around $55 dollars. Just a lil over enough to buy another 20rd box of 308s. So basically you wont really have a "difference" until you shot 320 rounds of 308's or putting that in a different way: you'll be asking your self if 300 win mag is worth the money after your friend has shot 320 rounds on his 308...

I think its worth the money for the flatter shooting, heavy hitting, longer range ammo. how about you?

Yeah but for 99% of .308 shooters they can walk into Walmart and buy a $13 box of Federal Blue box 150gr SP for about $14 to go deer hunting with and that will do them just fine.

You are not taking into account reloading either. 300 wm bass is more expensive than 308. Powder is also going to cost more because you are using a whole lot more of it.

As for barrel life you can shoot out a 308 quick if you don't take care of it and just keep shooting and shooting and getting the barrel hotter and hotter.

One thing know one asked . What are you wanting a 30cal for??? Would a 6.5 or 7mm be better yet?? That would help to pick the right caliber rather than just the cost of the cartridge. If thin skin hunting under 400 or punching paper under 500 yards get the 308. You can have a shorter barrel, shorter reciever and a bit lighter package thats easier to hunp around, if that matters. If the power of the 300 win mag is needed then look at that. You should also look at reloading then cost of the cartridge is even less important.

I have both calibers in multiple makes and models. I dont shoot target or competition so that's not a problem. Since I started with the 300, I have forgotten about the 308. I think its all personal preference. I have hunted all over, many species, and not once did anything shot with the 300 ever ask me what is was shot with. There are plenty of reasons to consider both. It's a confidence thing with me. I feel extremely confident that if I am within 600 yards of a trophy Ram or Bull, it's going down with my 300. I feel extremely confident that if Im over 350 yards from a target with my 308...I'm gonna have to close the distance.. But thats just me.

I have a .308 that I dearly love and hand load for. I shoot a fair amount, probably 500 rds per year and I am in the process of ordering a custom .300 win mag from savage just for the fact that the .308 starts rapidly losing it's ft/lbs at about 400 yds. I love the wide selection of bullets for the .30 cals so that's why I'm looking hard at the .300wm as a long range hunter.
