2002,
If you are wanting a rifle for long range shooting and still want to hunt deer and other game with. I would suggest the Standard 300 Winchester Magnum Rifle. It is more than enough for deer but you certainly could use it for that. However, they are exceptional well for long range shooting since they are accurate and flat shooting as far as trajectory. The 300 WSM is a fine caliber for hunting in the under 180 gr. bullet weight, but not the best at long range. Then when you consider that you can find Standard 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition at most stores throughout the USA that is a plus. The 338 Lapua is a great long range round but not for deer hunting a bunch too much! I also like the 7mm Rem Mag which is also incredibly accurate and can reach out there and touch someone. Not to mention the variation of the recoil of the 7mm Rem, Mag. 300 Win. Magnum and 338 Lapua. Certainly the 300 WSM would have less recoil but is questionable for your application as stated. Hope this helps!
