300 ultra mag

ammo is very expensive ,recoil is excessive, not a popular cartridge to find ammo for on hunting trips better off with 300wsm, regards M.G

I really don't see that much advantage over the 300 Win Mag. Of course you'll have more velocity and flatter trajectory but it'll come at a cost of more recoil, powder, and muzzleblast. The 300 Win Mag is just about my limit of recoil comfort when shooting off the bench. That's just my personal opinion and if you're dead set on the 300 Ultramag it does offer advantages but you'll find the ammo is not near as widely available as the 300 Win Mag.

I bought a reamer for the 300 Ultra when it was introduced and the popularity, if not huge, was sufficient to make the reamer purchase worthwhile. It is interesting to note that at least half of the people I made 300 ultra Mags for came back with a request for a lighter recoiling, lighter, hunting rifle within a couple of years. One guy said he didn't really appreciate his 30/06 until he used the RUM for a year. GD

What are you wanting to hunt with it?

I generally favor cartridges that have a larger case capacity, so I can get the velocity level I want without running at maximum pressures. The .300 RUM can be loaded down to equal full power .300 Win Mag velocity. If I didn't already own a .300 Win Mag, I would consider the .300 RUM, but that's just me, and I handload all my ammunition.

They are BIG loud heavy and all over just about worthless. The 300 RUM is HUGH and I believe slightly over bored for the 308 dia bore.

Yes you can load it down or you can run it maxed out. It will not kill anything quicker than a 308 or 30-06 or even a 300 wm.

That's what I was thinking...

just hard to beat 300 win mag unless you step up to a 338 ;)win

Plus no one wants to be round you when you are shooting.

I had a buddy that would take his ground hog shooting. He shot once and that was it no ground hogs for the rest of the day. Not because he killed anything but because he scared them all back in their holes. Plus 180gr Nosler BT are not really what I would call a ground hog bullet.
