30-30 sd round

general question, can you use soft point for self defense?
im reffering to legal terms? in other words can you be charged with using the unsuited type of round for self defense?
referring to california area...
also what would be suggested for a 30-30 type round thats suitable for self defense?
thank in advance

If you are forced to shoot someone someday, the round you chose to do it with will be the least oof your worries.

ture and i agree, though when all is said and done, will court go into specifics and say " you ccant use that type of round for sd, its inhumane or cruel"?

I think the bigger issue is whether you want to let loose with a 30 caliber round inside your home...there's a lot of velocity and energy in that round, up to 2,600 fps and 1,900 ft/lbs, the chance of overpenetration at SD distance is extremely high. Also a possibility that the round will pass straight through the target, the wall and whatever is next door.

Go online and look at your State's penal code. I seriously doubt you will find any reference to what kind of ammo is acceptable and what kind of ammo is unacceptable for shooting people. A good shoot is a good shoot, regardless of the ammo or weapon used.

ALways remember, you shoot to live. You never shoot to kill. Deadly force is a double edge sword. One edge takes a life, the other gives a life (yours).

I keep my 30-30 loaded with Remington Core-Lokt 125grain soft point Managed Recoil. The recoil feels much lighter and there is at least a little less chance of over-penetration.

I also can't recommend more highly the Skinner Express aperture peep sight.

Must be your only defence firearm or atleast rifle. Shoot what you would use to hunt with or as CHLChris said use the lower power 125gr MR loads. Just know that the round even with a solid hit may pass on thru and you must know what is down range ??

If you are sued by the dead perps family, then any lawyer will try to say that any ammo you used was selected for it's "killing properties" and that you had no regard for someones life or just stopping them.

All a part of the courtroom strategy. Whatever round you choose try to be aware of the penetration concerns, but a .30-30 is a nice traditional looking rifle that you could argue was your multipurpose firearm and was forced into the task of defense. It is a round that is definitely capable for stopping a bad guy. Even may give you a tactical advantage over a handgun. Hardest parts are running it from prone, and keeping it fed.

Oh, that's bunk. Any self defense shooting may be looked at by a court after the fact. But a 30-30 cannot be attacked very much, no matter what you shoot as long as it is factory loads. It is one of the less powerful rifle rounds, certainly weaker than 308 and 30-06, the other 2 most common hunting rounds.

Only in war are you not to shoot humans with hollow or soft point bullets, so says the Geneva Convention............Self Defense in the real world is something else, I say use JHP`s...........
