It's sort of ironic. The 30-30 is a great round and a bolt action really gets the most out of it. Add a scope along with the accuracy of a bolt action, the extra velocity of a longer barrel, and more aerodynamic bullets and you have a deer slayer that will put deer down out to 300 yards. A 30-30 is normally thought of as only a 100 yard brush caliber, but it isn't the bullet that's limited to 100 yards. The lever action rifles are what limit a 30-30 to 100 yards (mostly iron sights, shorter barrels, not quite as accurate as a bolt, and round nose bullets because of the tube). At the same time those iron sight lever actions ensure that the 30-30 will be around for a long time to come. I love lever actions but it's a shame there aren't more bolt actions available in 30-30.

My Win 94, 20" barrel, sporting the Williams FP, using FTX bullets, "will put deer down out to 300 yards." If I want to go 375 yards, I'll add a scope.

No, the lever action is not what limits the round. My lever action is just as accurate as my bolt guns. I have shot 3 lever actions other than mine; all of them were sub-moa accurate... 2 of them sport iron sights.

I regularly shoot 150gr FMJ and SST bullets in my Win 94, you simply load directly into the chamber. I don't know about you, but I only need one shot.

Savage will still build you a bolt-action rifle in .30-30 Winchester................
