Default 30-30 for grizzly????

Figured this would be a good conversation starter. Seen buffalo bore has some 190 grain ammo out for the 30-30 they say makes it usable for grizzly protection. Not what I would want, but I guess it could work if it was all you had. They put that combo together to use for elk and moose. I think its going 2100fps out of the muzzle...

if it was coming out of a dillon aero minigun maybe.

30-30 can take elk or moose or a grizz but its not a round i would trust my life to against a charging bear of any sort.

hunting an animal is vastly different than fending off that very same beastie that has a raging lust for your blood...

.44 mag is weaker and considered minimum for bear defense so I don't see why a very hot 30-30 wouldn't be at least a bit better.

i dont consider any handgun round adequate for bear.

bear have been killed in defense with things like the 45acp 40sw and 9mm but shooting a bear with a pistol and successfully saving your life is more a matter of luck than any ability to effectively stop a bear with a handgun.

police in alaska take a 12ga with slugs if they think a bear encounter is remotely possible. they arent lugging 44's or 500sw either

i bbq once a year in bear country cooking all nite. for decades i used a 458winmag recently switched to a 45-70.

if all you have is a 30-30 its better than a sharp stick but its not what i would consider, even remotely, as a dangerous game cartridge

I'm not going to look up the numbers on the 45-70 but I've shot both light and hot loads and there is no doubt it'll drop anything on this continent. It was designed for bison, wasn't it?

If it were me, and I had a choice, I'd use .338 lapua and I'd be a long way away from the grizzly.

Mountainman, you are going to turn into a .338 lapua.
