30-3- vs. .50 beowulf
Ok so I have a marlin 30-30 ( great deer fifle), but have been looking at the .50 beowulf, what does it do that a 30-30 canot do? Is there any real aplication that makes the hefty price tag worht it?

Tough to answer, you thinkin' an AR platform?
Still for deer hunting?
I would look at the 458SOCOM for custom reloading options.
All the bullets used in the loading of the 45-70 are at your disposal.
Much more utility to be gained with the 458, the .50 Beo, not so much.

most effective 30-30 loading is about 2000ftlbs energy at the muzzle
.50 beowulf is about 3100 ftlbs at the muzzle for its most effective loading.
its not really fair to class the 30-30 against the .50.
if you want some big knockdown for hunting at close range with quick follow ups as in bear or hog i wouldnt be packing a lever or bolt 30-30.
for deer or paper doesnt matter.
i use the 458 socom as my big bore ar15 choice.
full rebated rim cartridges like the 50 are difficult to load on progressive machines with case feeders. ammo is pricey and difficult to find at walmart.
if you already have an ar15 it might be a viable option.
just depends on what your gonna use it for.

Thanks for the quick sanswers, I will look into the .458 socom which seems like a nice shoice. I do have an colt AR and my consider a new upper. But with 30-30 vs. the .50 I was thinking deer, I dont hog hunt up here, and was just thinking of somthing new for deer up to and around 100 yards. If there is not much to gain with deer hunting with the .50 over the 30-30 then I guess I could pass.

I wouldn't get the .50 Beuwolf just because of the ammo costs. You can reload for the .458 socom pretty cheap.

Jebuses, I'm gonna sound like JD but you may have trouble finding a big pin SOCOM upper for your Colt.
Nobody tell JD I said that.

these work just fine
DPMS Offset Screw and Nut AR-15 Matte - MidwayUSA
one other thing the 50 beowulf has to have special mags. the 458 socom uses standard unmodified ar15 mags.
i use mine for deer hunting. i cant stress how good a deer round the 458 socom is with 350grn soft points. very little meat damage huge shock value kills the deer pretty much instantly. no tracking needed.

If no one made one I was going to consider machining something that that is almost exactly what I had in mind. I was going to do something different then just a slot though.
