I totally agree Flint, it was more of a question of what is best to go with at first, and learning to fire in terms of higher caliber rifles. I plan to stick with my .30-06 and I have a huge book on the different .30-06 bullets (every bullet ever made up to 2009) I got most of the knowledge down for the different bullets, but I have yet to test higher velocity ones, (180gr or less) and I have very little experience in shooting past 250+ yards while remaining accurate.

I'm not ready to enter and I could tell you everything possible to know about the guns I own.

Post of the day right here - I have absolutely no idea what it means or what the OP was trying to say...

For informal target shooting and learning, the 30/06 is just fine. I have used a 30/06 in competition at 1000 yards and it worked quite well.
The 338 Lapua, while it is undoubtedly effective enough, is an over-rated cartridge which has been successfully sold to various governments. I have attended matches where a $5500 rifle in 338L has been no more than competitive with 6.5mm rifles costing 1/3 as much. I am not saying the 338 cannot shoot well. I am saying, if the goal is to score well on a target at 1000 yards, it is no better than a host of lesser cartridges. GD

My good friend has the .338 Lapua Mag and I have had the pleasure of firing it. At $6 per round its spendy to fire but damn if it aint a rush just hitting a target out at 400 yards. He recently took it to the eastern side of Oregon and nailed his target at a mile out. Thats bad ass right there.
