I was just debating this question. I was looking forward to buying a new rifle but i didnt know which caliber....

ballistics are very similar but the .30-06 has heavier rounds...but if its just target shooting, that doesnt have a tremendous effect on accuracy....and the .308 is considered THE match round...and i also really like the short action on the .308 versus the .30-06

Thanks you all for your advice. I have noticed a lot of gun makers are starting to favor the 308 more now days. It is going to be something that I am going to have to think about.

Also, what do you guys think about barrel length? Will a bull 20" barrel work as well as a 26" heavy or 24" standard? Just wondering, I don't have much interaction with heavy or bull barrels in rifles.

Pick your favorite bolt gun, one in each caliber (Gander Mountain is a good place to do this --lots guns to handle there). Mount the empty gun and dry fire at an imaginary deer and then, with the gun still mounted (you're tracking the deer in the scope!) quickly cycle the bolt to load another round. That was the only test I needed to convince me to go .308 vs .30-06.

The balistics are almost the same for both up to a 170 grn bullit, over 170 grn bullit the 06 has better long rang balistics.
My 2 cents

Default 30.06 vs. 308

With factory ammunition under 180 gr. there is no real odds, and a .308 would likely be the best bet.

Having said that my personal preference is the 30-06. The reason the .308 will run with the 30-06 is the max.pressure is higher for the .308. This was done due to older rifles kicking around chambered for 30-06.

In modern rifles (like my Mod.70) equivalent pressures are quite safe,I have one standard load for my 06 with a 150 gr. bullet that chronos at slightly over 3000 fps. This is a very accurate load, and I use it for hunting and target work.

I have other rifles for other applications, but this rifle and load are high on my list of favorites.

the .30-06 is Definitely better once you start to reach 500+ yard shots...but as weve all seen and heard before...the .308 still does it regularly
