Does not matter even neck shots have been messy, last neck shot gunshot both shoulders and the neck was so mangled that she had to be hung by her hind legs to skin her since skin was the only thing holding her head on. Some of the backstrap was jello too, I have never seen the kind of damage my 30-06 does. No need for all that on deer, just my humble opinion.

My stepdad hit a whitetail with a 460 weatherby mag once. We have farm permits that allow us to shoot tons of deer on our property but we aren't allowed to use the meat or take a head or antlers for mounting so he nailed it at like 300 meters and the deer looked like a gymnast flipping thru the air lol

I have known of a couple of guys and myself that have shot Grouse during deer season with our hunting rifles .
You have to make head shots .

What bullets were you using? I have taken mule deer, elk and caribou with a 30.06 and didn't see as much damage as say a 243 does with a lighter bullet. If one uses a lighter bullet not made for the job a lot of damage can be done when it fragments. One that holds together won't look as devistating

Sean, If you don't mind, not all of us are military, and you are very hard to understand with all of this stuff. Sounds to me like a bunch of Call of Duty BS... but then I am just an armchair gun enthusiast who never gets out to the range (LOL).

Did not know that the M40 was chambered in 300 Winmag??

Yes many of them were rechambered into 300 winmag because of the increased range needed in Afghanistan and Iraq where the enemy had better range against our 5.56 with the 7.62. And no it's not call of duty bs I was in the invasion with 4th infantry division I was a corporal and a gunner in an m270a1 multiple launch rocket system which is the most powerful ground based weapon in the American arsenal. Since we were rocket artillery and our missiles and rocket fly hundreds of miles there was no real need for us so we were retasked to take on an infantry mission ie door kicking. We were also tasked out with fielding several rifles for designated marksmen which is right between a regular rifleman and a sniper so that the army would know what worked best. The end result being they upgraded the m14 and renamed it the m21 ebr
