Meh, 458 winmag is a much better caliber.

Can be loaded with lightweight 350grainers humming out at about 2500 fps for everything from deer to antelope yet uploaded to take dangerous game bear etc and shotshell loaded for birds and squirrel.

So I see your 30-06 and say nay 458winchester magnum is much better.

Nope not a grizzly bear lol but I was a squad designated marksmen in my unit and used both an m14 and also used an m40 in 300winmag and by far the m40 was the best

well just got back with my popcorn and soft drink!

i am a big fan of the 30-06 and have been for many years, but even given that, IMO, the 30-06 isn't perfect. personally, i don't think any cartridge is perfect. some are more versatile than others, like the 30-06 simply because it's been around for over 100 hundred years, and because just about anyone that makes a rifle, chambers one in that cartridge. take your pick of style of rifle in a 30-06 as well. and the factory ammo selection is pretty varied as well.

if i had to start all over buying rifles again, the 30-06 would be at the top of the list. there is no do all, be all, and end all rifle cartridges, but IMO, the 30-06 is pretty dang close.

If you didn't have to go to some horribly stinky place and fight people not worth the cost of a bullet to kill them, the weapons choices sound pretty good, "M14" just rolls off the tongue like "dead bear pile", just warm and fuzzy.

If I only had 30-06, or only .270 Win, or just .308.....I would be able to do everything I do today - shoot medium to large game out to 300 yards. That said I'm glad I can have variety, it's a reason to keep buying firearms.

i completely agree! varied selection of calibers in the gun cabinet is the spice of life!

and there will always be another one that i will want to add into the collection.

but if just starting out with either the first one, or only going to have one, the 30-06 would be my first suggestion for someone. the 270 and the 308 are also good options too though.

It may not be the best hunting, but it is a reloading dream.
