trevor,

Nothing wrong with either! But just for range shooting and some hunting I would go with the 308 Cal. And Jager congrats on the Boar! Very nice rifle also. What brand is it and the scope?

cheeseman, your 1895 Winchester (Or Browning) is a good choice for a lever, powerful and you can use spitzer bullets in that magazine. So can the Win.100 and the Browning BLR, but the 1895 had them beat by over a half a century. The Savage 99 could use pointed bullets and has been around almost as long as the 1895, but until it was chambered more recently for the .308 and .358, didn't have quite the power back then. The Savage's .300 and .303, were a bit better than the 30/30 around at the time though, in range and power.

Yes, '95 Winchester, I was surprised to see it in 30/06 too.

I miss my 1895.. but mine was in .30 US...

As for the op.. I suggest a M1917 or save up and get a M1903, those are the finest two rifles I own...

If I was going to buy a new gun I would get a 30/06. I wouldn't quit hunting if a 308 was all I had. You can find surplus ammo for both cartridges with usable brass under 75 cents a round.

As someone else mentioned, a Ruger American or Savage Axis would fill the bill. If you can spare a few more $$$, a Winchester Model 70. My only 30-06 is an M1 Garand. I love it, but wouldn't want to hump it on a hunt.

I'm thinking of a local pig hunt with my M1. I can reload some solids to M2 pressure and velocity so I don't have to worry about over gassing it.

Figured I'd put this pic here...

Just loaded 200 m2 ball rounds at my sisters place waiting for walking dead to come on. Did in anticipation of my M1 Garand showing up this month. I plan on using mine for this hunting season

I would suggest you buy some used stuff first and try different makes.
