280 rem. questions

first off, I already know better than to try it, but out of curiosity, a friend told me 7mm mag ammo would fire from a 280, is this true? I'm pretty sure 280 cal is equivalent to 7mms, but i think the 7mag casing is larger in diameter.

Also, going elk hunting in wyoming this year, I would like to be able to take a shot up to 300 yds if needed, as long as I can make a good confident shot at this range, is the 280 going to have enough power at 300 yds. to take down an elk? how much am I at a disadvantage with a single shot by not being able to take a second shot? being used to deer hunting i think one well placed shot would do it, what do you guys think?

I've never shot a 280 Rem. But someone I know does, According to him its just a little bit bigger than a .270, And My Uncle has a 7mm WSM, The Shell casing should be too big to fit properly. ( Besides if You have a .280 use a .280 shell, gun will last longer, So will you.)
As for the Stopping power, I have no clue, But I think a well placed .280 shot would do it.

the 280 remington is a 30-06 necked down to 7mm it started life as the 7mm rem express then got changed.

Your friend is WRONG.The 280 will not fire the 7mm mag the 7mm mag is the same as a 300 win mag case wise.

i think what your friend may be refering to is at one time the 280 remington was known as the 7mm express . it is the exact same round with a different name for marketing purposes . remington dropped the 7mm express name to avoid confusion with the magnum round .they remamed it 280 remingtom .the 280 is in fact a 7mm class round . they both shoot the same dia. bullet (.284)and i believe you can expect good results at 300 yards with good shot placement . be sure to use a better bullet .
ps , sorry tango i didnt read your post before placeing mine . pretty darn similar.

.280Rem is a great round. Easily capable of taking Elk out to 300 with one of the premium bullets like a Barnes TSX.

Easy on the recoil, flat shooting and mild.

The .280 is a good elk rifle when loaded with a tough bullet. You want penetration in a good elk load. I don't see any disadvantage to using a single shot.

Your friend is an IDIOT! DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO SHOOT A .280 ROUND THROUGH A 7mm MAG RIFLE!!!!!

Or vice versa either.

The .280 will fit in the 7mm Remingtom Magnum chambered rifle but it is unsafe to shoot it.

As stated earlier the .280 is the same as the 7mm Remington Express. This is not the same as the 7mm Remington Magnum.
