270 wsm for elk?
would it be suitable for elk or any bear?
|
As with almost all calibers, shot placement.
Now, is the .270 wsm a humane round for elk and bear with proper shot placement? Yes. Now, go forth and bag game. Then give us pics! |
Sure it would. Just be aware of the range you are shooting and the quality of bullet you are using. W/ a 160gr Nosler partition it would be perfect out to 400 yards.

BULLETS!
I have taken more elk with the 270 Win than any other round, BUT you MUST use bullets that are heavy for the caliber and tough (140/150 Barnes, 150 Nosler Partition, 150 Swift A-Frame). The 'standard' cup and core bullets will not hold together to get the penetration you NEED and the 130 grs are to light to give you the momentum you need. Hope this helped! |

It will Kill an Elk, use a hard projectile like TTSX or not so OTT with Accubond or Partitions.
Dont aim to break its shoulders, break his heart an Mount that 6x6 |
No question, it will work. I elk hunt with people who use it and have great success. I would even use it on bear. If I had bigger, sure I would use it, but that is enough gun.

I hunt elk with a .30-06 and 150 gr Speer boat tail softpoints. Haven't lost one yet.
Several of my friends use a .270 Winchester and 130 or 140 grain speers with excellent results. If you are a decent enough hunter to stalk within 300 yards, do not shoot at running animals, and don't try to drive a bullet into the chest from the arse end, a .270WSM will be all you'll ever need. |

thank you so far to everyone's replies....to last previous post, i see it being possible, longest shot ive taken is 280yds with a 270win on a mule deer..(tasted good!).....in that case, from the looks of it, i should be fine....
