The .264 Winchester Magnum was popular in the 60's. Hyper velocity round that had a reputation for burning up barrels in short order. Mostly fallen from grace lately.

If your looking at one to buy the bore should be checked with a scope by a smithy. Great anitlope rifle but not as practical for many today. They were very hard on the throat area of the barrels. If cheap enought and in good enought condition, stock too for a rebarrel??? yes

I have had my.264 for 25+ years.( Mod.70 Winchester) This rifle has been used quite extensively for competition, hunting and target shooting. If my records are correct it has fired 18 factory cartridges, the balance of the 3500 plus rounds have been reloads.
While the throat is past any bench rest bragging condition the rifle is still a 1 moa rifle with its favorite loads.
I attribute the longevity of the bbl to not trying to get the max. out of my handloads. I have always thought of this calibre as a 6.5x55 Super ( 120 gr. sierras @ 3000 fps.) It is interesting that my 30-06 of the same age and same model and use pattern has somewhat less throat wear but not much,it has never fired a factory cartridge and the favorite load for it is a 150 gr Hornady SST @ 3000 fps.)

My dad has had a sako .264 since the early seventies. It shoots as good today as it did then. IMO the barrel will last as long as any other, if you don't get it too hot. It certainly isn't any more "overbore" than any WSM cartridge. Like the 220 swift, when anything capable of "hyper-velocity" comes out, there are those who push it to the limit and burn them up. Using moderate loads and letting the barrel cool, you'll never have a problem. My dodge pickup will go 100 mph, but I don't always drive that fast...

I don't want one I'll stick with my 30-06 Sprg. ( You could see it on one of my other threads)
