This is getting ridiculous. I don't give a damn if you like .243 or you don't. The bottom line is it is a proven deer, and antelope round. It just so happens its a very good varmit round with way more options in that dept than a 308. I know men who have killed hundreds of deer. Every single one of them was killed with a .243. Ive used mine to kill deer, hogs, coyote, fox, and a poor armadillo that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I normally hunt with a 30-06. I don't like the .308 because I think its a piss poor 30-06 wannabe. Thing is I don't go out of my way to bad mouth it and other rounds I don't like out of respect for hunters and shooters who do. I have killed deer with my mini-14. Is it optimal? Of course not. Does it work? Every time.

To me the .243 while a good calibre in it's own right is caught between the hot .22's(22/250,.220Swift etc) and the .270,.308 and 30/06.

It'll take deer ,pigs and goats and can be used as a long range rabbit, fox buster but in saying that it can knock a pig, deer or goat over it hasn't got the knockdown power of the .270,.308 or 30/06 so if it were human it'd be having an identity crisis.

The .308 on the other hand to me is a deer, goat, pig gun that can use a 150gn projectile quite well where as the .243 can only use a 100gn(probably a bit heavier projectile) for the bigger animals with it's seemingly ideal weight being around 85-87gn where as the 150gn projectile seems to be the ideal weight in the .308.

I've shot the .243 and .308 and seen both take pigs but although I don't own a .308 or .243 I'd be taking the .308 over the .243 on pigs, goats and deer and using the .243 as a back up.

Lol. I was curious so I looked back and the member who started the thread, Alpinet6, has not relied since page one and were on page 8.

I noticed that too. Maybe he got tired of the arguing?

243 is for girls who can't handle recoil. Shot placement has to be just right or your prey is gone and will most likely bleed to death in the woods. 308 might not be perfect but it sure will take deer and larger prey down better.

Here's a thought.

Regardless of which side you're on, all of the reasonable arguments that can be made for either side have already been made. Twice.

Why not just let this one die a peaceful death before it gets so contentious that a mod has to close it?

Let's go with stratrider. 30-06 is a common cartridge that can be bought at the corner drug store and it will take down a moose. Or should we shoot the moose with a 22 short between the eyes? Guy's, the member who posted the thread has lost interest. We will never come to a mutual agreement because we are influenced by personal preference. Regardless of ballistic data and or common sense.

Rickster, i am hardly recoil shy and i like the 243. i own many different rifles in various calibers, though currently am lacking a 243 which will be rectified in the near future.

the 243 is simply a 308 necked down to a 6mm caliber. it's an excellent caliber for young hunters or shooters moving up to a centerfire caliber. i know, it was my first one.

making such remarks is really quite silly. such remarks display a lack of maturity to the subject being discussed.
