.243 75 grain v-max
I just bought my 8 year old a Mossberg .243 bolt action rifle for his ninth birthday. I was looking to buy him some bulk ammo too and seen that I can get 75 grain V-Max $1.14 a round from Cabelas. My question is should I get him these for him to hunt deer with? I have always thought of the .243 as the best deer round for where I live at in Kentucky because they dump all their energy into the animal under 100 yards. But, I have never hunted with that round with anything less than 85 grain bullet, it works well.
Thanks for the input, let the suggestions begin. |
Stick with the 100 grain bullets for deer. The "don't use anything less than 300mag 180grainers" will be along here shortly to tell you how inadequately your kid is armed. :D

V-Max bullets are not for big game. They are for VARMINTS.
I would say I agree with the other guys 100 gr + If you wanted to use 85gr Barns or other premium bullets you may get away with them. |
I used his rifle the other day to a doe. I was using 85 grain Interlocks, they messed that deer up! It is the worst damage I have ever seen a bullet do to a deer in all my years hunting. I think I will get him a couple of boxes of those and let him have at 'em.
