Default 223 vs. 308

Ok, I have heard that the 223 is more accurate and hits harder. I don't know much about ballistics but I would think that this isn't true? Whats your opinionon this?

depends on the gun.

a 223 out of a precision varmint type 24" rifle will be more accurate and hit harder than a 308 out of a 1.5" short barreled rifle...

while on the other hand a precision varmint type 24" barrel 308 will be more accurate and hit harder than a 223 out of a 1.5" short barreled rifle...

the truth doth lay somewhere in the middle

same type of gun 308 is more powerful than 223.

Definitely will hit harder than 223 out of that combination.

The ballistics table in my horniday catalog shows the .223 superformamce cartridge with a 55gr gmx bullet traveling 2872fps carrying 1007ft lbs of energy at 100 yards while the .308 superformamce with a 150gr gmx bullet is moving 2715fps and has 2455ft lbs of energy at 100 yards as well. Hope this helps

Your welcome. At 300 yards 150 grain 308 hits almost exactly twice as hard as a 60 gr 223 at the same distance

That is significant. The person saying this may have been referring to an sporting rifle.
