.223 vs 25-06

Took my AR and Howa 25-06 out to the range today with a few of the guys and forgot ear protection. I know, stupid of me for not making sure they were in the car and after finding out after a 40 minute drive, I decided to wing it for a bit. I started out with my 25-06 and it wasn't too bad on the ears but when I pulled out the AR, it was almost too much. Bad enough that I only put a mag down range and put it back in the case for another day. I'm no expert on ballistics or muzzle velocity or anything required to understand that stuff by any means but they seemed to be shooting around the same velocity (I think?) so why was my AR so much louder than the 25-06?

What are the barrel lengths? Do you have a brake or flash hider on the AR?

ShagNasty1001 03-13-2012 01:22 AM

The AR is a 16" barrel with the RRA tactical muzzle break and the 25-06 is I believe a 24"

Shag,If you think your AR is loud, just shoot a few rounds out of a PLR-16 223 pistol. You really need ear plugs and a headset when you set it off.

Oh I imagine that thing likes to bark. I know I needed plugs, just stupidity took over but i can only imagine what that thing is like

Shotguns seem to make my ears ring more than rifles. Ever shoot a shoot barreled 20 ga. single shot w/o ear protection? (stupid, I know) That is loud!

I have used the filter from cigarettes as ear plugs in a pinch. They work ok and are definitely better than nothing.

I have not, though I did used to shoot skeet without ear protection with some friends in one of their backyards. That didn't seem too bad though. I can only imagine what a single shot would be like though!

The non-braked .25-06 projects the sound in a cone forward and from 8" further away. The brake will project a significant amount of sound perpendicular to the bore and WILL be louder to the shooter. The 06 will be louder from the front though.
