Remington 700, Ruger 77, Winchester 70, Savage 14/11/12/10 would be my first choices. Although all centerfire rifle rounds have the possibility of traveling the distance you are talking to hit a building, all of them also have the possibility of ruining meat if there is a bad shot placement issue. If it were me I would stick to the 308 and try to be as careful as possible about the direction I am shooting. If you aren't skylining shots and are hunting in woods as opposed to fields the odds of a bullet traveling and hitting anything is slim to none especially if you are careful in the direction you shoot. Good luck in whichever direction you decide to go.

I would go with the Savage 11/111 it has a 1:9 twist which will allow you to use Speers 70gr bullets.

If houses are that close maybe you should try something in a large pistol round. Less kick and still take down a white tail deer if your close enough. I'm picturing a thick woodsy area. I don't know why lol

Give the tikka's a look. I have a T3 .223 with a 1-8 sporter weight barrel. So far I have tried 55 gr. v-max's and 69 gr. SMK's out of it, both will shoot well under an inch and sometimes way under!!! The one thing that bothered me at first is all tikka's are built off of a long action, no matter the caliber. The rifle also has a plastic detachable magazine that bothers some people, but I have not had a minutes trouble out of it. It's not going to win any beauty contests but the gun just flat out shoots! I will learn to live with its cosmetics if it continues to shoot the way it does lol.

Either that or a 12ga slug. My .44-40 lever is a great 100 yard rifle. It was the number 1 deer slayer until the early 1970's when the .30-30 took over. There is another thought, .30-30, .32 Winchester special, or .358 Winchester. I use a 9.3x57 for the same use, but the rifle has more class!

Actually it's thin woods with lots of downed trees and limbs (including widow makers). We had a ice storm and '09 and it thinned out everything but the forest floor. I am also shooting in farm fields to. I know I do not want to go to a pistol round, thanks for the recommendations though guys/gals.

The .358 is a legit 200 yard rifle. My 9.3 has 150 yard express sights. 4" drop at 200. Nothing a little holdover can't cure.

I am still leaning towards a .223 if for anything a range gun I can play with a little and still hunt with.

I own a DPMS bull barrel Panther AR15 and will take any North American Game animal there is. I am a Vietnam Vet and believe me, it will do the job. That bullet hits mass and it will tumble and do unbelievable internal damage. If you need to take a follow-up shot, your scope or sight will never leave the target. There is very little recoil. If you are hell bent on a bigger, reasonably priced cartridge, try a 7.62X39 or a 7.62X54R This is just my opinion, and for every 10 replies, you will get at least 8 different opinions. Just my .02 worth.
