I use to hunt with a gun borrowed from one of the guys I use to hunt with. It was a .223 and he had killed a couple of deer with it. When bench shooting and getting comfortable with the gun it shot very well. To bad I did not have the chance to harvest a deer with it
Just curious why do you think the 308 is too much? Where I hunt the most popular guns by far for deer are 30-06, 308, and 30-30, here it is not often to get a 300 yard shot unless you are on a highline or farmfield. 308 is a fine gun for deer hunting out to and beyond 300 yards if the shooter can make a shot at that range.

Thank You!

Yeah, why not 308? Sounds like a good all around caliber to me. I don't hunt, but I plan on getting a 308, you never know....

I am worried that the .308 will either mess up the meat on the deer if I do not make a clean shot or if I do miss it will keep traveling. I hunt in areas where there are either houses or barns a 1/4-1/2 mile in each direction. .308 rounds are also a little more expensive than I'd like to pay for target shooting on weekends

There are several .223 bolt action rifles in my gun safes, including two Sakos, one built for Marlin. My favorite .223 bolt action is the CZ model 527 American. It has a minature Mauser action. Using carefully crafted handloads mine makes five shot < .75" groups at 100 meters. Mine is the left hand version.

Are you allowed to elevate yourself such as in a tree stand or elevated blind? This could eliminate your worries.

I am in western ky the way the hills roll prevents this from being an easy fix. I hunt in stands that are at least 16 feet high but as mentioned this doesn't help much. I have been using a 30-30 marlin but it doesn't reach out there and touch like I would like

Back on topic after the little temper tantrum.

Is the 223 an ideal Whitetail cartridge. NO can you kill them with SURE as hell you can. I would use A nosler 60gr Partition at least. You HAVE to use a premium bullet that is as heavy as your rifle can handle. If the 223 can kill ragheads then why can't it kill a deer?

I understand you being angry and I will say it is not acceptable here to be rude to other members. But......I will say, Bigdaddy, that your posts will be read and responded to if they are actually readable. A very big pet peeve around here is lack of punctuation and capital letters at beginning of sentences, etc. For your posts to have any merit, one must be able to read and understand what you wrote. If you chose to continue to post as you have been, don't be surprised if you get these kind of comments or your posts are ignored.

The Hornady LeverEvolution has a new 30-30 bullet in 140 grain,I wonder if that would get out there further in your 30-30.

My thoughts were the same I just want to get more opinions. I am very open minded but I believe .223 will do good for me. What brands would y'all recommend? I would like to pay under $700
