What is a good .22 cal rifle just for target shooting at a range? im a new shooter and i want a fun and affordable gun to shoot with cheap ammo.

A ruger 10/22 is fun and cheap. It shoots .22lr and is VERY customizable!

The 10/22 suggested by nick is a great choice. Totally customizable. You can deck it out in just about any configuration you want. Parts for it everywhere. Everyone sells them. I think you can even get them at Wal*Mart. .22lr is a very common round. Every sporting good store in the country stocks it, along with most "super" / "mega" style stores.

The CZ 452 is a really good little .22 cal bolt gun. Very nice. It's a little more expensive than buying a 10/22 however.

Companies like Kimber and Sako will come up in discussion, and they all make fine weapons, but they are all pretty spendy.

The benefit of a boltgun, especially for young, or new, shooters is that you learn one round at a time. Control. Single shot. Single result. Load a new round. No temptation to fire off a whole mag and "see how you did".

What kind of budget are you looking to spend?

If you want a fun and accurate little gun for about $200, the base model Henry .22 Lever Gun is a blast! Beautiful walnut stock, action smooth as glass, and beautiful wood -to- metal fit. Only complaint I have is the plastic barrel band and front sight. I have a cheap BSA TV View 2-7x scope on mine and it will put all shots into a quarter-sized hole at 50 yds.

The Ruger 10/22 sounds like somthing I might like. I will do more research before I choose anything... Thanks for the help. Also, semi-auto was my choice over bolt. I once shot a Marlin .22 and it seemed alright. anything on this?

I have 3 Marlins - two are based on the Mod.60 semi-auto action which has been a staple of theirs for decades. The 3rd is a bolt action .22 Mag which is also a tack driver with the right ammo. Don't expect stellar accuracy from a stock 10/22 without changing to an aftermarket barrel. They are very easily customized, but in their stock configuration they have nothing on any other semi .22, and in fact I believe the stock Marlin Mod. 60 is more accurate, probably due to the longer barrel. The Marlin is cheaper too, and they used to come with their patented Micro-Groove rifling.

Save up some more money and get an Anschutz or Cooper rifle. They will last you a lifetime and if properly cared for will increase in value.
