I have very limited experience with rifles. I am looking for a quality rifle, probably a 22-250 for prairie dogs, coyotes, etc. I need it accurate for several hundred yards. Would you recommend a different caliber? I am looking for one in the price range of a Rem. 700. Obviously, accuracy, durability/reliability, and quality are important. It will not be modified by a gunsmith (I want a quality out of the box rifle because the only modification will be quality optics). I have considered Howa, Savage, Marlin, etc. Any suggestions would be great.

.22-250 is an excellent, flat shooting round. I have seen excellent groups out of Ruger 77 varmint rifles, and Savage Varmint rifle of the model 10 and 12 variety. depends how far you really p lan on shooting. A .223 would still be adequate out to 300 or even 400 yards with the right bullets and shooter. The .22-250 just makes figuring your trajectory a bit easier since it shoots so flat.

One of these day's,I'm going to have a custom 22-250 barrel made with a 1-8 twist.I've never understood why the mfg's limit the bullet weight of this caliber to the lite weight 40-55gr bullets.
I love shooting the 75gr .224 bullets out to 500-600 yards with my 223's,and it would be nice to have even more zip using a 22-250 case with the same bullets.

Unless you reload,a 223 will be a lot cheaper on your wallet to shoot,and it has no problem getting out there down range.

how do i go about choosing between all of the different brands/models? previously, i was looking at the remington 700 due to its popularity. if i can get a higher quality, accurate gun for a similar price i would much rather go that route. the price of the ammo isn't a huge concern. the rifle will not be used very often.

Imo you cant get a "higher quality" or a more accurate rifle than a remington 700 for the price.

If you want a "classier" gun, tikka has some good bolt guns in the 650-800$ range.

Rem 700, Ruger, or the Savage rifles will ALL put a smile on yer face. My P-dog gun was an older Savage in 220 Swift, but the Swift and the 22-250 are (IMHO) so close as to make the difference imaginary. Unlike an elk hunt, you will probably not be carrying the rifle for miles, so heavy barrel is good.

Visit some shops, hold some of each, see what speaks to you. While I am very happy with my Savage, the folks with Remingtons and Rugers are as well. Some like chocolate, some like butter pecan.

what about the Marlin XS7VH model. 26" heavy varmint barrel, adjustable trigger, pillar bedded stock. MSRP of about $395. comes in 308, 22-250 and now 223. very accurate and very well made. i have the XS7VH in 308 and it's very accurate. just ordered one in 223 a couple of weeks ago.

i will also say this, as much as i like my Remington M700's, and i have several and will also buy more, my Marlin will hang in there all day long as far as accuracy with the M700's.

I was looking at a rem. 700 with the longer barrel, stainless steel, etc. It was $900+. After reading on this site I was under the impression that you could get a higher quality/more accurate gun for the price, but I may be wrong.
