Personally,I say the 223.

The .204,and smaller calibers are affected by wind too much. But then it all depends on what you want to do with it.
I've just never bought into all the new fangled micro-calibers that the mfg's keep coming out with.

It really depends on your use. Building a rifle does not give enough info.

are you going to reload ?

204 will do at 600 yards what a 223 will do at 300 yards.

204 is extremely accurate where 223 can be.

What do you want to spend and what type of optics ?

What base distance do you plan to shoot and what targets ?

need to consider what the primary purpose of the rifle you want to build. then then pick a caliber that best suits that purpose. my reasoning is own many different guns in different calibers so that i always have a gun for any purpose! or at least this is how i justify the new gun purchases to my wife! works so far.

Depending on twist ....
I would go with a fast twist 223
Easy choice

i agree with that barrel twist is also a big factor when deciding on a barrel. bullet weight will be a factor when deciding barrel twist. now as that i have both of these calibers, a remington M700 26" barreled 204 and a bushmaster carbine 5.56mm w/ a 16" barrel. so these are two different types of rifles, both in the calibers you are interested in.

Since the OP has not specified his/her intended use, everything is speculation. 600 yards w/ a .204 is even more speculation, or wishful thinking. Guys I know that shoot it for P-dogs max at 450 yards and are accomplished shooters.
