I don't know alot about guns but I inherited a gun it says 1898. springfield armory 173065 it has a shorter front stock than the pics i see and has a very old scope on it over 2 feet long..... the barrel is very heavy but the caliber is tiny...I think smaller than a 17 hmr but the shell chamber is alot bigger like 30 cal size cartriage.....any info would be appreciated

It should be a .30-40 caliber. If the bore is considerably smaller than that it may be some kind of a drill rifle. A cerrosafe casting of the chamber should comfirm the caliber. A good strong light could give you an idea if the small bore is full length or just at the muzzle.
