If you're hunting for meat use the fmj cause the ballistic tip and the tnt won't leave much left for eating. As the others have said head shot's if you can. You can shoot aspirins at 100 yards so head shots won't be that hard.

I do on a good day at the range using a shooting rest or bi pod.

Like others have said, you won't be shooting at squirrels at anything more than 50 yards.

It's very hard to pick up a squirrel at distance with a scoped rifle. They are very small and move around alot.

Get a marlin 917 with the heavy barrel. I love mine, out of the box it will shoot one jagged hole up to 100 yards.

I have shot a lot of prairie dogs with 17 HM2 and 17 HMR rifles. The 17 grain bullets do a lot a damage with any body shot. I have shot a few cotten tail rabbits taking head shots with the 17 HM2 rifle , I d not use the 17 HMR when hunting small game I wonted to eat unless it was a head shot. Hitting a head at 100 yards under hunting conditions could be a bit trickey.

I wouldn't say 300 yards is a shot you should not be taking with a 17 unless you are screwing around at the range on paper targets, that bullet is too light to carry energy out that far, 150-200 yards is generally considered max effective range on small varmints, squirrel, prairie dog, woodchuck sized animals here is some reading on the ballistics, it has some good info on sighting in, bullet drop.

A .17 rimfire has a Max. effective range of 300 yards? You have to know that is incorrect.

I have the heavy barreled marlin 917v and it is more accurate than I can shoot it, ita like a lazer beam, and no recoil so you put crosshairs where ya want em and you can see the impact in the scope. Do not use vmax or tnts on squirrels it will darn near blow them to pieces, as stated use fmjs or gamepoints, even with head shots the vmax make a nasty mess.

My point was that the .17 rim fire can no way be effective at 300 yards. This is a very close range arm for thin skinned small animals. If you want a 300 yard rifle you should look at a .223 or ?
Why my Post continue to be attacked I don't know? My likes are much higher than these negatives. Good Luck Guys.
