14.5 in barrel plus 1.5 in compensator?

I've read about ar builds with 14.5 in barrels and a compensator that extended that length to the legal minimum of 16 in. I live in MI and I was wondering about the legality of this, if adding a compensator really would qualify the barrel as the legal 16 in.

The compensator, flash surpressor, muzzle brake etc. Must be pinned and welded to a 14.5 or 13.7 inch barrel to meet nfa regulations. This is a federal ordeal, to your state it would be looked at exactly the same as a 16inch barrel.

Yes, a barrel with 14.5 or 14.7" barrel and a pinned flash suppressor or muzzle break will be legally a 16 inch barrel. Not sure about MI gun laws so you may want to be sure on which pinned device you are able to have

Good to know, thank you

Epley, as was said, from a federal standpoint the device must be made semi permanent. No accessories that can be removed can be counted in the length of the barrel. The other catch 22 is that you need to read up and determine the legality in your state of using a flash suppressor or muzzle device. In some areas I have read that you must get preapproval from a local LEO or sherriff's office for the use of "tactical accessories". I don't how true that is but better to spend a little while looking at the literature than a little while writing checks for legal fees and such... Do us all a favor and snap some pics of the final build so we can drool and admire!

Mi is pretty conservative when it comes to gun laws, and so far I haven't found any special state restrictions on ar's. It'll be a while before I get all the parts and get them together, but I'll definitely post some pics for you guys when it is finished!

Finally all put together!! (mostly) the weld on the muzzle brake is NOT my finest work, but a little filing and a home parkerizing job and you'll never notice!

As long as it's pinned, it's legal. My PWS MK114 has a 14.5" barrel with a PWS FSC556 pinned to it and I live in NJ...
