1:12" twist on .223

What grain bullets would shoot well?

Sniper03 12-25-2011 07:04 PM

midgets,

You should shoot no heavier bullets than 55 grain 223/5.56 ammunition through it! Any bullet heavier than 55 gr. will have difficulty stabilizing in flight which will severely effect accuracy. If you shoot 69 grain or heavier you will probably experience side trikes on the target or key hole strikes at 100 yards. That is because the 1:12 twist is not fast enough to stabilize the heavier bullets. I posted a thread in the sticky section of the AR-15 Forum regarding barrel twist if you get a chance to look at it!

Thanx sniper. I've been just shooting 55gr. Fmjs, but was curious about heavier bullets.

midgets,

If you get a chance get a box of Federal Premium 55 Gr. BTHP bullets and see how they shoot regarding accuracy. The code on the box unless they have changed them is P223E. Also the American Eagle 55 gr. FMJs shoot almost identical as far as zero in most ARs.
What type AR are you shooting and model?

My 1:12 bolt action loves 45grn hp with 1/2 MOA. 55grn get 1 MOA. I need to try some 50-53 grn bullets.
