If the s/n is out in the open...it's more obvious when/if the thing has been tampered with. Just bought my wife a Smith/Wesson J frame and the model and s/n is under the frame where it swings out. If someone is careful, you could remove the s/n and never know it w/o knowing where to look. Just my .00000002 cents.
