Ruger MK I - Hammer bite ?

Was shooting my old MK I today and after 100 rds I felt a sharp twinge in web of my shooting hand. No external hammer to bite me but something sure did. After another mag it even drew blood. Has anyone else had this problem ?

Is something out of spec ? No idea but it will cost me $65 to ship it to Ruger...hopefully someone will know a low cost cure.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the latch on the back of the grip is loose and that is what is causing the "hammer bite"

Thanks Mac29 for the suggestion. I'll double check the take down latch and call Ruger CS for some advice. (The bite was the same place as a 1911 hammer bite. )

After looking at exploded diagram and it is the bolt stop pin which is attached to the main spring housing which bit me. (Edited)

I was talking w Nitestalker and when all else fails - give it a thorough cleaning ! :D. (Carbon build up can cause parts to flex under recoil)

Will try simple solution first while I wait for Ruger to respond to my e-mail.

Note: I have never had this issue w MK II and I stress test that puppy on a regular basis...MK I is much older pistol.

Range Report

The MK I - after a thorough cleaning and I replaced the recoil spring. The gun fired 50"rds w/o incident and gun shot & grouped like a champ.

I have no idea what went wrong - originally ??? SAO 22's can spit gas n fouling on occasion.

Lesson Learned: When All Else Fails - Clean it !!! :D
