when you say "carpet rests" do you mean a piece of wood that is covered with carpet or is it something else? I never knew that foam or carpet rests were bad for storage.

Yeah, wood covered with carpet. I suspect that in certain instances, that would be fine. If you have a safe that stays closed, and is dehumidified, it should be fine. But I have a cabinet. There is airflow in and out. I parked mine across the hallway from the bathroom. The felt rests collected moisture, and caused the barrels to rust.

I live in S.E. LA. My safe resides in a small room off the garage. It doesn't get much hotter or humid than right here. I use an Eva Dry. Regenerate it about once a week, no problems.

I live in SE FL and my safe (an Oxbow by Cannon) is in my garage (bolted to the concrete block wall and to the concrete floor, plus I built a cabinet around it so you cannot see the safe). I use large bags of DampRid silica gel and change them every 2 months or so. My safe is 8 years old and no rust at all on my guns. The door is not a composite, but rather 1/4" steel.
Picture 1 is my safe in it's cabinet.
Picture 2 is my safe with the cabinet door open.
Picture 3 is the safe door open and crowded

I kinda cringe when I hear Garage Safe...
knowing full well it's one of the easiest places for a burglar to get into...
How often does one leave the big door wide stinkin open...

Heck, some guy can be mowing the backyard while a scumbag walks in the front bay
and steals whatever he can quickly get his hands on...

I live in Fl. and even rust rusts here. There is no way I would keep my gun safe in a hot garage. Even inside, where is it constantly air conditioned, I keep desiccants in my safe. For inexpensive desiccants I use unscented kitty litter kept in old socks in the safe. It is cheap and effective.

I am also in Florida. My safe is in the house in a closet. So far I have not used any desiccant in it and have had no problems with rust. I do like the kitty litter idea though. Plenty of that around the house.

Unless your garage is air conditioned, DO NOT store your guns there. My garage, during the summer, especially, gets up past 120 degrees sometimes. I've already lost boat electronics storing them there. Also, if you have any love for your guns, buy something better than Stack-on to store them in.
