You are correct in that narrow makes a world of difference for IWB carry (as does the weight) This is part of the reason that 1911s are such a good carry gun (that and they are awesome on many levels). The only thing you sacrifice are bullet capacity in lieu of slimness that you will get with a single stack magazine gun.
I carry three different guns regularly IWB at four o'clock position.
Sig 938 (cocked and locked)
Kimber ultra covert 1911 (cocked and locked)
Walther PPK (round chambered)
A good quality holster really is as important as the gun. When carrying IWB I would recommend a holster that has an extra long tag of leather at the top against your skin. This is key a if your gun has an external safety ( as all of mine do). If you don't have it and are not wearing a t shirt underneath you will find your safety digging into your skin which can be uncomfortable. All of my holsters are the "Bodyshield" model from stoner holsters out of Ohio. About $50 and worth every penny. They custom make their holsters for every specific firearm model which insures a perfect fit.
