I've been carrying a 4" GP100 in an IWB, Uncle Mikes for the past few months, it shoots great, equipped w/ night-sights and I'm extremely confident with it. Always have 2 reloads with me and the comfort level of the IWB isn't bad, plus I'm used to XDs, SP101 or a 1911 for carry. Don't ever see myself with anything much smaller, definitely no .380. 9mm at the very least.

Remember carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting. . .

I used to think that also but, with DRT .380 ammo it levels the playing field

Okay, Michigan Winter, so you have to anticipate that your assailant is going to be dressed in heavy clothing. Multiple layers and at least two will probably be strong cotton or flannel, plus some sort of out coat.

The .380 isn't getting through that. It's going to be a mild annoyance at best.

How big are your hands? Do you were gloves when you are out?

With winter clothing, I really prefer a big, heavy slug. Something that is going to hit hard and penetrate.

A fast moving round like the 9mm will penetrate, but I doubt it's going to do a ton of damage unless you get the 147gr +p and get some good body hits.

.40 cal and .45 are both a good winter round. I personally only carry a 1911 in .45ACP with the 230gr +P jacket hollow points.

Do you like a compact gun? Or do you like a full sized gun? How about a revolver? Any interest?

What handguns interest you? And what have you tried out?
Personally I prefer my Sig P250 compact 9mm using none other than Hornady Critical Defense Ammo only! This will penetrate thick clothing...Even in the 380 there is a very good chance for penetration over any other ammo. 3/9/11-Just added the STL 900 light/laser combo! Awesome xenon light!!!

My EDC is a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II.
Sometimes for whatever reason I carry my Taurus .38 snub nose.
But then when I feel rowdy, my Kimber Classic Clak, just because I can.

Rem 1911 R1
Springfield XD45C
Ruger SR40
Walther PPS40

A couple of years ago I carried a Walther PPK/S but decided not to trust my life to a .380. It's just a plinker now.

I keep coming back to my Glock 30 for some reason. Currently playing with a Sig C3 which compared to the Glock 30 is a tack driver. Heavier, less rounds though. I have played with them all.
Glock 30
Glock 36 (too few rounds)
HK USP Compact
Sig C3 1911 Compact
Sig P239
Walther P99 9mm (pea shooter)
Smith and Wesson SW99
Springfield XD9
Springfield XD45
etc.

And I keep coming back around to the Glock 30. Like the Colonel said, its gotta start with a "4" when talking caliber. I do, however, have a Glock 26 that I refuse to part with; carries nicely in warm weather or when wearing 'lesser'.

I am also able to possess and transport my handguns in Canada (NO CARRY!! Read and know the law) so 4.17" barrel and 10 round magazine are considerations. Smaller than 4.17" and it cannot cross the border. I ensure that all of my firearms are okay for crossing the border and with regards to the 10 round magazine make sure as well that they are good in all states and counties. What a pain. So much whining about the Canadian laws for handguns and in actual fact I think with the exception of having to register the handguns and not being able to carry they are a whole lot simpler but leave you defenseless if you are on the move in your car, etc.

The laws, state to state, drive me nuts. I am also driven nuts by the fact that since I do not have a state of residence (we have much family, drive around a bunch being retired, and keep a home in Canada) I am not one of "We the people". I have a US Passport, born in the USA, etc., so why am I not one of "We the People" and why do some states refuse to issue me a concealed permit and others (several others) do. Carry permits need to be like Drivers Licenses. Got one? It's good everywhere.

I digress. I guess my fav carry stateside would have to be the Glock 30 despite its inaccuracy compared to some others like the Sig C3 or the Kimber Pro Carry II. They say the average gunfight is 7 feet, 7 rounds, 7 seconds. Under that assumption, I gotta love my G30. Ten round magazines + 1 in the tube. What's not to love?
