Default Remington UMC JHP 9mm for self defense

I recently bought my first handgun, a 9mm for target shooting and for self defense in my home. Since I bought I have been reading a lot about different ammo and stocking up as much as possible. I have read a lot about over penetration on 9mm FMJ which is what I have been buying. Last time I was at walmart they had a 100 rnd box of Remington UMC JHP 115g. I know these are probably not the highest quality JHPs but surely they must be more potent as far as expansion and have a lesser chance of over penetration than a standard range FMJ? I have read that this ammo is dirty which I did notice after shooting some but for the price I don't mind and it gives me an excuse to take my gun apart more.

So basically how much better will these 9mm remington UMC JHPs be for self defense in the home compared to FMJ 9mm?

Depends on the shooter's accuracy.

Short answer: Yes.

Get her dirty, then clean her so she starts to respect you. When her trust is complete, she will serve you well for a lifetime!

Whats are the differences between this JHP round at $.26 each and more expensive rounds (besides being a dirtier round)?

You really will see it. I bought 20 rounds of Corbon 124gr +p JHP today, and as my magazines hold 16 rds, I shot 4 just to make sure they feed okay, feel them out, etc... My first 2 shots were in the same hole at 7 yards, and the next 2 were within 2". Then I fired a box of Remington FMJ and shot my normal crappy pattern. Spend the money on high-quality carry ammo and shoot the target ammo frequently. Research the ballistic performance of various loadings and projectiles, watch the gel-shot videos, and tailor your choice to what you expect you might be faced with. The Corbon is about 4X the price of the Remington, but it's for a reason.
