Good question- and my answer is "pretty much, yes" Difference between III and IIIA is the jump from 357 Mag to 44 Mag- and to 9mm at subgun velocity. Problem is not resisting penetration, but rather what to do with all that energy that was driving the bullet? Cannot recall seeing a IIIA that did NOT have the trauma plate to spread out the energy. Otherwise, vest stopped the bullet, but being hit in chest by sledgehammer stopped your heart.

And BTW- ain't NOTHING bulletPROOF. It is bullet resistant.

This is a point blank Level II vest. Yes it stops the 44 mag bullet
This first one shows how frontal area can bring big bullets to a stop fast.

This second one shows a 308 rated SAPI plate. Yes it stopped the bullet but you would be hurting.

A friend of mine is mentioned in the foreword of this, and if you have any specific questions which you can't find the answers for elsewhere, I can ask him. He literally "wrote the book" on ballistic protective gear.
